To reproduce in terminal run man simple-scan. Then read the man pages and
notice it says Simple Scan has been written with GTK+ libraries, and
after installing
the application you can run it from the Applications menu.
But lubuntu and now ubuntu with unity don't really have an applications menu to
run it from but ubuntu-mate does. simple-scan:
