When pluggin in a microphone, the Unknown Audio Device window pops up and the microphone can be selected. The Microphone - built-in Audio menu items appears in the System Settings > Sound > Input window as expected and any sound picked up by the microphone shows up as a moving segment in the Input level display. The input can be switched to the Internal Microphone and this shows an appropriate Input Level on the display.
What also happens is that a Headset Microphone item appears in the Input list as well as Headphones item in the Output list. The sound output can still be directed through the Speakers (which is not the case when a pair of headphones is plugged in and identified as the presence of these headphone prevents sound being sent to the speakers). This, of course, verifies that the sound output is under the control of the software. This behaviour is therefore inconsistent with the selection made of the Unknown Audio Device. When connecting a pair of Bluetooth headphones, their menu item appears in the Output window and the mode can be selected between High Fidelity Playback (A2DP) or Telephony Duplex (HSP/HFP). However, when in the Telephony Duplex mode, one might have expected the headset's built-in microphone to appear in the Input window. The microphone works when the headphones are connected to a mobile phone which automatically switches the mode from A2DP to Telephony Duplex when making or receiving a telephone call. It is reasonable to expect the Bluetooth headphones' microphone to be available to the Sound System for use with video call apps for which the Dell XPS13 is equipped by having a built-in webcam and internal microphones. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to unity-control-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1414693 Title: Sound panel in System Settings fails to recognise built-in audio Status in unity-control-center package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: When the system starts up, the sound system sometimes fails to recognise the sound hardware correctly. One instance is where the System Settings > Sound window shows the Speakers, Built-in Audio in the Play Sound Through window but shows the settings for HDMI / Display Port instead. It is necessary to click on the Speakers in order to get the correct Settings for Speakers to be displayed. What the System Settings needs is a link to PulseAudio Volume Control which provides more options for selecting the various sound channels and options available e.g. Speakers, HDMI / Display Port or Bluetooth. This app is not necessarily known to the uninitiated. Perhaps some of its functionality needs to be included in the Sound window selected from System Settings.
