A further observation: When a bluetooth headset is switched on and connected via the drop-down menu in the bluetooth icon, the mode sometimes appears as the Digital Stereo (HDMI) options. Using the Volume Control - Configuration tab to choose Off for the Built-in Audio allows the bluetooth options to appear in the Sound - Output window. Otherwise, only the Test Sound button appears for the Handsfree entry in the Play Sound Through menu.

Status in unity-control-center package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: This is related to a previously reported bug but, since downloading updates, the bug has taken on a new set of behaviours. Initially, Ubuntu needs to be restarted several times before the built-in audio is recognised. To eliminate the possibility of a hardware fault, the systems diagnostics has been run on boot and indicates no faults even with the sound system. When the built-in audio fails to be detected, it is possible to get a bluetooth headset to appear as a menu item. However, its available options do not always appear in the Sound panel. It is necessary to select the Pulse Audio Volume Control app and select the bluetooth option (Telephony Duplex or High Fidelity Playback) in the Configuration tab. These options should appear in the Sound window but do not always appear. Another instance of the bug showed itself by there being no sound through the bluetooth headset even though the Sound window and the Vloume Control window indicated that it appeared to be connected. (This was sound produced by the Videos app that produced a moving ribbon in the Playback tab of the Volume Control window. The connection was forced by opening the VLC app and selecting the bluetooth headphones from its Audio > Audio Device menu. The audio from the Videos app then played as expected. Currently, this version of Ubuntu is showing multiple instabilities in failing to connect the available sound outputs (Speakers, plug-in headphones, Bluetooth headphones) to the sound output of the videos app. Even the Test Sound button in the Sound window cannot be relied upon to function as expected all of the time.
