Public bug reported: nvidia driver installation hung during installation through the System Tools -> Software & Updates -> Additional Drivers tool. Rebooting resulted in black screen, single user recovery mode wouldn't boot either. Finally recovered by booting from LiveUSB, chrooting into existing system, purging nvidia*, and reinstalling xserver-xorg.core.
