Title:
User list search box should be disabled when user list is disabled.
Status in GDM: The Gnome Display Manager:
Expired
Status in “gdm” package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
Binary package hint: gdm
If the gdm user list (face browser) is enabled, then beginning to type
a username locates the appropriate entry in the user list. If the
user list is disabled, this search box serves no purpose and should be
disabled. Since users are accustomed to typing their username at a
login screen, the fact that this search box appears is confusing,
leading them to believe that they are entering their username which is
not true. If they continue to press enter and begin typing their
password, which is a rather standard and reflexive behavior, then
their password winds up appearing in plain text on the screen. The
combination of this useless search box with the requirement of
clicking a Log In button leads to a very confusing environment for
users who disable the face browser. In an enterprise environment,
this is a serious problem.
