Under a standard desktop install of trusty, i don't have a
/etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf. Any clues on that?

Title:
lightdm: no graphical login for nis user

Status in “lightdm” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in “nis” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
If I install a Ubuntu 12.04 system from scratch, everything works
fine, but if I want to use nis package to allow nis user to login, I
cannot. I have to insert the following line into
  /etc/lightdm/lighdm.conf:

  greeter-show-manual-login=true

Otherwise one cannot login as a nis user from login manager lightdm.
From my point of view, this has to be done automatically during
installation of nis or ldap client packages.

  Alex
