OpenArena freezes after few minutes of playing on Radeon HD 3200

Bug description:
Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-radeon
FPS in OpenArena is very low. It freezes after 3-4 minutes of playing. Screen
resolution is set to 640x480. Lowest part of the screen (~5-10% is not
displayed at all).
killing X with "Alt+SysRq, K" restarts the GDM in its initial state.
Also desktop 2D is extremly jerky (Gnome, no Compiz, no visual effects).
OS is Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS.
Video card is Radeon HD 3200 (notebook).
I am working from the external display (primary notebook display is off).
