I was able to clone the display using this command as a workaround:

xrandr --output VGA-0 --same-as LVDS-0

Title:
  Cannot mirror displays

Status in “xorg” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
running ubuntu 11.10 on a dell latitude e6410 laptop.

Connecting an external display or projector defaults to an extended
desktop configuration. If I want to mirror the display for example
when giving a slideshow, I cannot.

The short cut key is not responsive.

The 'mirror displays' option in the displays setting dialog is greyed
  out.
