Christopher, In the end I found the keyboard shortcut options via the sytem settings and found that the keyboard shortcuts for these actions had changed to something else, which I can't remember now. I set them back to the default.
If it would help I could run the CD image as a live USB stick on the machine I had the problem on. Unfortunately I don't have a spare drive to do an installation.
