I neglected to mention and thought it was probably pretty important:

I walked through the installation process (automatic, because I am a
newer Linux user) on my new 13.01 install of Unbuntu and this printer
install for the Canon PixmaMX880 worked flawlessly.

Later the same day when I walked through the exact same process on my
older install of 12.04 Ubuntu (it's probably 6 months old) it failed
with the above error "no trusted origin".

I am unsure whether the age of the Ubuntu installation or the version of
the Ubuntu installation is more impactful, or both.
