This has been the case for me since 12.04 LTS, when ever the a sound is
playing and the volume is up on 100% past the unamplified setting it
freezes most of the OS, but the instant that the volume is turned down
there is a delay, Linux catches up and unfreezes everything. I have a
feeling that Pulseaudio is knotting things up. I'm unsure where the
issue lies but this does seem to be the case. I do hope that this does
not happen with the Ubuntu Touch OS for mobiles cos I know a heap of
people that crank the volume right up to the max. Linux 3.0 has always
been an issue for my realtek audio, 5.1 no longer works as standard when
compared to Linux 2.6 which was fluid.

Title:
Ubuntu 13.10 random screen freeze while Normal OS activites

Status in “xorg-server” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I have recently, re-installed fresh ubuntu 13.10 distribution release.
But everything worked fine. until recently i had strange problem of my
display screen getting freezed randomly; but no response to either
mouse/keyboard.
But i want to point it out; it happens randomly and is not specific ?
Other day, i had music player playing in background, but screen freezed. but
my music was still running.
Kindly note, i used multiple monitor setup and same issue of screen freeze
also cropped up.

I,am not sure, whether it is bug ?

  thanks for the expertise support.
