System -> Preferences -> Monitor Preferences Uncheck "Same image in all monitors". Monitor: Laptop Select 'Off' Result: Both laptop display and external display turn off Expected result: External display should remain off. Workaround: disable gnome-settings-daemon randr and xsettings plugins.
