I changed in the file /etc/init/lightdm.conf the line

stop on runlevel [016]

to

stop on runlevel [06]

Now lightdm automatically starts after booting. But I haven't tested the
change with many runlevel changes.

Bug description:
  The stop on condition of lightdm causes it to stop on switch to
  runlevel 1:

  stop on runlevel [016]

  But the start on will not be satisfied on transition back to runlevel
  2.
