This is still present in raring :-(.
That's two releases of Ubuntu that did not even try to address this ugly
problem. It leaves a bad impression on users, especially those coming here from
"alternative" OSes, (where they got used to have graphics "just work").
("Did you see this stupid -- whatsitcalled? -- You Buntu? It leaves black
traces on the desktop when I move an icon *lol*!)

Title:
Icons leave a trail of shadows with compositing effects enabled
Status in “metacity” package in Ubuntu:
Confirmed
Bug description:
Oneiric, Unity 2d
When compositing effects are enabled in metacity, icons dragged around
the desktop leave a trail of shadows (i.e., the icon's shadow is not
correctly erased at the last position but stays on the desktop), until
the icon is dropped.
