I do plan to upgrade. I usually wait several weeks or a month before
doing it though. Will let you know whether issue is resolved at upgrade.

Thank you.

Subject: [Bug 1165440] Re: calc freezes when beginning to edit new or existing
spreadsheet

Do you have plans to upgrade to Ubuntu 13.04?  (It comes out tomorrow.)
13.04 comes with LibreOffice 4.0.2 which has a lot of fixes (and some
great performance fixes for Calc) in it.  (I suggest completely removing
Apache OpenOffice before the upgrade).

If you are planning on upgrading soon, please report back if that fixes
(or changes) this bug.

Title:
calc freezes when beginning to edit new or existing spreadsheet

Status in “libreoffice” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  start computer

  launch calc
  - begin editing new spreadsheet and calc freezes (occurs on first event, e.g.
click in cell, type first letter/number), calc window goes grey for upwards of
30 seconds, then unfreezes and normal editing resumes
  - opening additional spreadsheets or creating other new spreadsheets does not
encounter freeze but these actions can only be performed once initial freeze
has passed

  - or -

launch calc by double-clicking a spreadsheet
  - begin editing and spreadsheet freezes (again first event as described above)
  - often sub-menus are empty after freeze is over, e.g. Insert/Names,
Insert/Picture, Data/Filter and etc display submenu stub with no entries. Must
close and restart calc to cause submenus to be repopulated
