Thinkpad T520 w NVS 4200M Ubuntu 12.10 Fails to work as well.
Fixed it by patching thinkpad_acpi and recompiling (don't know if it's necessary). Someone posted http://askubuntu.com/questions/125367 /enabling-mic-mute-button-and-light-on-lenovo-thinkpads/279135#279135 before I actually managed to get this to work. The first answer gets the idea of it but there were some minor problems when I tired to use it... ie nothing happened. There was a minor problem with the bash script variables but works with some tweeking.
