Rebooted and logged into KDE. After a variable amount of time usually 1 to 5 minutes the screen would freeze although most times I could still move the mouse pointer. Had to hard reset to get the system up again. Did 'sudo apt-get purge xserver-xorg-video-intel'. Restarted system and was able to login and use kde okay with no problems. I assume that the video driver now being used is VESA? Reinstalled xserver-xorg-video-intel. Rebooted and then logged into KDE. Problem with screen freezing returned.
