If the user changes the icon for trash by: right click, properties, select custom icon, the trash will no longer respond to wholesale icon theme changes initiated by the "Appearance Preferences" menu. Further, the icon does not respond to the presence of trash files by indicating full or empty status. I tried to resolve this by 1) removing the trash icon from desktop visibility through gconf-editor then 2) altering the icon them then 3) replacing the icon on the desktop with gconf-editor. It did not work. The trash icon will not work on the desktop or within a panel.
