Sorry guys, it seems I was a bit too hasty reporting this bug. Turns out
the problem is actually in the mic itself. I don't have another mic
handy so I plugged my headphones into the mic jack and was able to
record some sound that way. It was a bit distorted, but that is most
probably because I used headphones as opposed to a proper mic. I'll try
to get me another mic and test it again soon. If there is still a
problem, I'll reopen this bug. For now, I'm closing it.

Title:
[7650DHU, Conexant CX20549 (Venice), Red Mic, Left] No sound at all

Status in “alsa-driver” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Hello,

The external mic on my machine doesn't seem to work. If I crank up the
mic volume all the way to 100% or over, I can hear some noise, but
nothing more. I noticed that there are several bugs reported for this
particular sound codec (Conexant CX20549 (Venice)), but none of them
seems to be about the external mic. So I'm reporting this new bug. By
the way, I'm pretty sure the microphone itself works fine, as I used
  it before without any problems.
