Same problem here: black screen freeze after boot right before the login screen. Ctrl-Alt-F1... do not work. I am on 12.10 64-bit with Nvidia proprietary drivers, all recent updates installed. The problem started to appear a few days ago.
The workaround is to login through ssh and do 'sudo killall plymouth'. Login screen appears immediately. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1080156 Title: Xorg freeze --Ubuntu 12.10 hangs on the first boot of the day, works only after hard shutdown.
