Hi, mad...
thanks for the email.
Unfortunately I don't really understand what xorg etc are, or what is
responsible for the fault. I just reported a problem using a function
installed in the OS.
If it happens again I'll look out for the appropriate 'report a bug' tool.
The report definitely states "probably a fresh install", which it's not,
hence the clarification.
I'm running 12.04 now, and it mostly works.
Regards

Steven

Title:
  report inacurate

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-ati” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
not a fresh install as per report but upgrade to 11.10 via ubuntu update
manager prompt. (started with 10.10)
System will not shut down except via hard power button long press or term
'sudo shutdown now -P' (otherwise cycles endlessly to login screen).
Janitor will not run (says, "make sure synaptic or update is not running",
which they are not, according to system monitor)
Also most notification applets have disappeared from top taskbar (clock,
weather, network, power).
Programs installed via Ubuntu software centre to try and address this
(compris, metacity, mutter) fail to show up in application menu. (Can not
figure how to run them).
Ran the xorg diagnose prog in my attempts to figure out how to fix these
problems (I have no idea what Xorg is or what it's meant to do).
When run window popped up with error message "Failed to load module "fglrx"
(module does not exist)
