Trash / Rubbish Bin shows as "full" when it's empty

Bug description:
It's not quite clear what is causing this, but I'm certainly not the
only one to see it
Symptoms:
1. Trash item shows items in it
2. Clicking on Trash icon opens Nautilus which shows no items in Trash
(including hidden files)
3. Using the quicklist to empty the Trash makes no difference
4. Running `unity --replace` brings everything back to normal
