I seem to be experiencing this corrupt audio bug as well in Ubuntu 12.10, 64-bit. I hear loud ringing/noise when I start, un-pause, or seek video in VLC. The same circumstances also induce audio sync issues that last for several seconds. In my case this only occurs when I use HDMI audio - the sound control panel says I have a "GF119 HDMI Audio Controller". Inspired by comment #5, I am able to work around the problem by setting "Tools...Preferences...Audio...Output module" to "ALSA audio output" and setting "Tools...Preferences...Audio...Output module...ALSA...Audio output device" to "HDA NVidia, HDMI 2 HDMI Audio Output".
