Worked this out with Dell support. Apparently a common problem with
Dell Precision M6500, but not sure of the reasoning. Problem was
resolved by replacing motherboard and video card (under warranty). Hope
this helps someone else with this problem!

Dell Precision M6500 laptop with NVIDIA Quadro FX 3800M
Latest NVIDIA driver from the website: version 304.60
Running KDE.
Using single external monitor on docking station, with no output on laptop
display.
Navigate to System Settings/Display and Monitor/Screen Saver/
Choose any OpenGL screen saver ---
The screen saver will display a small preview for about 1-2 seconds,
the display will go dark and the system will be unresponsive to all
keyboard or mouse commands. It does, however respond to ssh
connections, and the power button will reboot the system.
