Things that I noticed:
Sometimes the drum sounds on login actually get played but after that the 
computer stays mute.
If nothing else this tells me the speakers are working fine, so no hardware 
failure here.
When I ran ubuntu-bug on this and it tried to play a test sound I could hear 
the speakers "clicking" as if being enabled/disabled again and again.
