@raymond : I read through the function stac92xx_init() in the patch you
linked above. That is a very complicated piece of code and I can see
how a small hardware implementation difference on my motherboard might
be the root cause of the problem.

The only way for me to narrow down what is wrong will probably require
me to download all the kernel & driver source and build my own custom
kernel to debug it. I have not needed to do that in almost 15 years -
something that the newer versions of Linux have left far behind. I
might take a look but its a lot of work when I have a simple hack as a
workaround.

I assume that the upstream Alsa developers watch these launchpad bug
listings (?) so if this becomes a more common problem this will provide
some background information. If its just limited to the motherboard in
the HP Pavilion p7-1227c then I don't expect there will be much interest
to pursue it further.

Title:
  Very low sound on HP p7-1227c

Status in “alsa-driver” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Anyone else ever encountered issues with low sound?

  Installed a fresh new install of ubuntu 12.04 x64 alongside Win7.
  Everything runs great except for the sound.

  Computer is a [hp pavilion p7-1227c][1].

  **What i've tried:**

  * I've also tried adding the latest audio ppa.
  * reinstalling `alsa` and `alsa-mixer`
  * Check the settings in system -> sound
  * Attempted to unmute and amplify the speakers, headset etc
  * Modified settings in `pavucontrol`
  * Attempted this solution:

  particular computer.
