Thank you Christopher, it ended up being a misconfiguration. Unchecking
the "Disable touchpad while typing" checkbox has returned the clickpad
to a much more useable state: two-finger scrolling works, two-finger-
click for right-click works, click-and-drag works. I am confident I can
configure the soft button area if necessary. The enable-rightbutton.sh
script didn't work, complaining that the property name "Synaptics Right
Button Area" doesn't exist. I discovered that there is instead a
"Synaptics Soft Button Areas" property on my clickpad.
I'm closing the bug, since it appears to be a configuration issue rather
than a system bug. Thanks again for the pointer.

Title:
Trackpad works incorrectly on Acer Aspire One AO756
Status in “xserver-xorg-input-synaptics” package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
The AO756 includes a multi-touch trackpad, and a "buttonless" design
such that to click the button, one must press on the sensitive surface
of the trackpad.
Regardless of the scrolling method defined in System Settings -> Mouse
and Touchpad, clicking at the bottom of the touchpad and dragging with
a different finger locks the cursor in one position, as if the
touchpad is trying to interpret a two-finger swipe. Since both
fingers are not moving, it's not interpreted as a swipe, but also
isn't interpreted as expected, as a click-and-drag event.
Additionally, the right-click and left-click functionality (along with
emulated middle-click by clicking right and left together) is not
being interpreted. The trackpad has only one switch, but should be
using finger placement on the pad to determine which click is
requested. Instead it's acting as a single-button mouse, always
registering left-click.
Additionally, the "disable trackpad while typing" functionality
doesn't appear to be working correctly, with the mouse cursor moving
during inadvertent touches to the trackpad while typing. I believe
these issues are all related, although I'll be happy to file separate
bugs if so requested.
Through testing an unrelated bug, I already know that this issue
exists in upstream kernel 3.6.2. The issue does not exist in Lucid
(10.04.4 LTS live environment), which interprets right-click, left-
click, and click-and-drag functionality correctly. I didn't test two-
finger scrolling, although I have no reason to expect it doesn't work
in Lucid.
In Precise, the trackpad is functional for basic use, with two-finger
scrolling working correctly, and left-click functionality working
correctly. Right-click is unavailable via control-click or alt-click,
although that may be down to a configuration option I haven't found
yet.
