I'm having the same issue in 12.10. I just noticed it two days ago. I did quite a bit of updating from software center Updated some Tweaks stuff and other programs. Even added Htop hoping to catch something but all I caught was more freezes. Today ..it happened about 5 - 7 times. I've worked about 10 hours a day on this machine the past couple days and it's very annoying. Finally got this machine setup so I can work from home and now I'm considering going back to my Window's machines if my backups don't work. I run daily backups and I didn't notice this problem last week or even the past 3 or 4 days... just the past couple days. There were a few updates from Synaptic that I took on that were 70+ megs each. ... gonna try and roll back a few days ago and see if that helps.
My issue always, always, always occur when I have multiple instances of the same program opened and try to transition between the windows . I am using unity. Example ====== OPen Text editor > open a file > click on text editor on the launch pad again > right click and select another instance of text editor. Sometimes I have 3 or 4 opened to review various log files , screen shots, traces, etc. Eventually, when I select the launchpad to open another application or another instance of the text editor, firefox or file manager or Ubuntu Tweak, etc and when it transitions to multiple windows then it locks the screens. The screens seem to have a ghostly almost translucent image. The mouse is free to move all over the screen but the keyboard is locked out or at least nothing respond to it.... Only option is to turn the power off and reboot. I do have Htop loaded and try to monitor memeory and stuff but nothing jumps out and when it locks of course I usually don't have Htop where i can see anything to point a finger at... THIS IS A 2 GIG MEMORY GX260 Optiplex DELL ... NOTHING SPECIAL BUT ALWAYS A SOLID WORK HORSE IN WINDOWS. JUST LOADED 12.10 ON IT THE PAST COUPLE MONTHS. DIDN'T HAVE THIS ISSUE ON MY 12.04 INSTALL ON THIS SAME MACHING. I UPGRADED TO 12.10 AND DIDN'T NOTICE THE ISSUE ON BETA 1 EITHER. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/993187 Title: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently. No other TTYs can be started. Mouse doesn't move. Keyboard doesn't react. The only solution is hard reset. Seems to happen on a variety of configurations, including nVidia, ATI and Intel graphics. If you are still able to TTY or SSH into other sessions, move the mouse or use the keyboard, file another bug. Thx. Joris V. (brains). Update: 5/21/2012 Updating the kernel to 3.3.6 as suggested by Michael in #91, the system seems stable, no freezes yet in 5-6 hrs of using and watching videos for couple of hrs. Original description: I recently installed newly released ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 bit version on my desktop. And it is frequently freezing, for the first few hours it ran smoothly and when I started watching videos it started freezing randomly. I have to use hard restart every time. Initially it was only during videos but now even during normal browsing it is freezing. I am using on board graphics and do not have any graphics card installed.
