I tried to do exactly what you said, however it didn't work, I still
didn't hear any sound. I even tried it with the right channel.

Title:
  [, SigmaTel STAC9221 A1, pink Line In, Rear] No sound at all . Pink
  Microphone port does not work.

Status in “alsa-driver” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  1) I installed the Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS on a Intel D945GCLL Intel 945G
  Socket 775 mATX Motherboard. The Microphone port never has and does
  not work. However. the output and line out ports work.

  2) Command "apt-cache policy pkgname" returned "N: Unable to locate
  package pkgname"

  3) I expected the microphone to work when plugged it in the port and
  used a programme that required audio input like skype.

  4) The port was dumb. I tested the head-set on a different computer.
