Title:
lightdm hangs when login after a first failed login because of an
  error in .xprofile

Status in “lightdm” package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
I've edited my .xprofile, and wrongly I made a syntax error mistake,
anyway, I've logged out and tried to log in again. Lightdm log in, but
goes back to lightdm because of the Syntax error in .xprofile (I've
realised looking at .xsession-errors). Then, I tried to log in again,
first without fixing the .xprofile, but LightDM completely hangs.
Second, I've restarted the machine, tried to login, failed of course
for because of the syntax error, then jumped to console (using
CTRL+ALT+FN), fixed the .xprofile and returned to LightDM, tried to
log in but it hangs. Seems like a saved state by lightdm remembering
  the .xprofile with errors.

My setup is with Xmonad + Unity 2D, just running xmonad + with unity-
2d-panel, and the gnome services like settings daemon.
