Sounds as if the main problem was that you were missing some needed
package.

** Package changed: network-manager (Ubuntu) => edubuntu-meta (Ubuntu)

Title:
Wi-Fi works with Xubuntu or Edubuntu live CD but not after
  installation of Edubuntu

Status in “edubuntu-meta” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Edubuntu 11.10 64bit. Intel Corporation WIFI Link 5100 on a 64bit Sony
  VAIO

Wireless works flawlessly with LiveCD. Post install, however, wireless
  doesn't work.

During install, I checked off the option to install the wireless
  network.

  Symptoms (after installed reboot):

1.) No wireless networks are shown as being available.
2.) The wireless network which had been installed does not work.
3.) If one disables wireless networking, it cannot be re-enabled without
restarting.

Removed installation and installed Xubuntu 11.10. Wireless works
flawlessly after installation. The problems 'seems' to be Unity/Gnome
  related?
