@Kushal This is happening because eog uncritically assumes filetype from filename. The image viewer doesn't crash but displays red strip that says "Could not load image '<file name>'. Fatal error reading PNG image file: Not a PNG file" and strip has Retry button which is when clicked, doesn't open the image but all it does is the red error strip is removed. Note that Shotwell (another default option to open and view images) opens the same file perfectly.
