This has really nothing at all to do with the 64-bit instruction set. Correct, /etc/network/interfaces is required for the system to work properly. The main difference is that NetworkManager is now expected to wait for ifupdown to bring up the loopback interface (because there otherwise were issues starting dnsmasq properly). Starting the loopback interface is an integral part of the system and is required by quite a few other services. What brings it up is the configuration in /etc/network/interfaces, so indeed, as a minimum it has to contain the following:
auto lo iface lo inet loopback For the technical; you would be able to notice the difference between network-manager package versions in the file installed at /etc/init /network-manager : there is a new "and static-network-up" line. There is no need to start NetworkManager manually with "sudo NetworkManager" if /etc/network/interfaces is in place. Since this isn't a bug; I'm closing this bug report as "Invalid". ** Changed in: network-manager (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to network-manager in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1007561 Title: Update to 0.9.4.0-0ubuntu4.1 results in no networking Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: Did recommended upgrade to ...-4.1 Result: Waiting for networking on splash screen, followed by :waiting for further 60 seconds on networking on splash screen. at login ifconfig only shows loopback.
