I am having this same problem, but when trying to open nautilus (or
terminal) within a vncserver session. vnc error log reports:

gnome-terminal: /build/buildd/cairo-1.10.2/src/cairo-image-
surface.c:1320: _pixel_to_solid: Assertion `!"reached"' failed.

and

nautilus: /build/buildd/cairo-1.10.2/src/cairo-image-surface.c:1320:
_pixel_to_solid: Assertion `!"reached"' failed.

  Nautilus does not start automatically when starting up gnome classic.
  When trying to start nautilus from a terminal session there is a short
  flicker on the screen and I get the following message:
