Same problem here on Ubuntu 12.04. I'm on a large network, but I can only access a few hosts over SMB with Nautilus. On most hosts I get this "Failed to retrieve share list from server" error. The "smbclient -L host" command works for every host.
As far as I can tell the problem occurs only for specific SMB host OS'es. Both Windows 2008 hosts I tried were unaccessible through Nautilus, while the Linux host I tried (smbd 3.X) could succesfully be accessed. But there are probably other factors involved. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gvfs in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/930696 Title: NAUTILUS: Failed to retrieve share list from server Status in “gvfs” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Greetings: Ubuntu 11.10 Nautilus 3.2.1 As the attached screen shot below shows, we ARE able to see Windows PCs on our network from Ubuntu's NAUTILUS, yet we are NOT able to access their shares from NAUTILUS, even though they work fine with each other, i.e. each Windows PC IS able access the other Windows PC's shares just fine. Please infer from this information the answers to any questions about our situation you may have. Note this is a default/pristine configuration, i.e. no changes have been made whatsoever.
