unity not loading unity 3d in i386 installation from a feb28 immage

Bug description:
despite being selected during the login, unity 3d isn't loaded. Only unity
2d, whether selected or not, is loaded. At least, the launcher is that of a
unity 2D
Moreover:
in this unity 2D mode, with the autohiding off, the left side of the
applications' windows is keept hidden under the unity lauuncher
the installation was from an iso immage of feb 28.
