buchs, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. The way LibreOffice Writer displays the screenshot is exactly the way Word displays it, keeping compatibility expectations with it. Hence, this is not a bug. Feel free to continue to report any future bugs you may find.

I have a screen shot of some text that illustrates the problem. I have underlined the word "Trust". It can be seen that the "r" is too close to the "u" and too far from the "t". It looks fine when it prints. Note the zoom is 100% and the font is Times New Roman 12. I have done nothing to configure kerning or change the character spacing. The problem persists even if I zoom in to 600%. Note, I was thinking that I was reporting the bug to LibreOffice developers when I picked the menu option from Writer to "Report a Problem". I see this is going into Ubuntu. I hope that it gets to the LO folks.
