I agree it seems something has gone wrong with the session startup and
gnome-shell itself seems to be innocent.
Please:
1. Make sure you're not already running a Wayland compositor elsewhere
on the system.
2. Log into a VT (Ctrl+Alt+F4) and delete the files most likely to be
causing the problem:
cd /run/user/$(id -u)/
rm -rf wayland-*
3. Alt+F1 to return to the login screen and try again.
