I've filed https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager-
openvpn/+bug/2143861 to track this regression. We'll be reverting the
current upload back to the previous state, which should fix your
regression (you're very welcome to test this, but it is not required).
Then we'll work from the known-good state to re-fix *this* bug in a way
that doesn't regress your use-case.
