I have the same issue; I have configured grub to disable the splash screen, and yet the same symptom- of the small "x" cursor appearing on screen, besides nothing else, appears. I have a basic intel integrated gpu; there are no crash files in /var/crash; after viewing the whoopsie page, I see a number of crashes affecting programs that I have installed on my system: (Not very relevant to this issue, though)
