I have the same issue; I have configured grub to disable the splash
screen, and yet the same symptom- of the small "x" cursor appearing on
screen, besides nothing else, appears. I have a basic intel integrated
gpu; there are no crash files in /var/crash; after viewing the whoopsie
page, I see a number of crashes affecting programs that I have installed
on my system: (Not very relevant to this issue, though)

2024-11-04 22:11 2024-11-06 04:11 UTC Crash google-chrome-stable
2024-11-03 17:11 2024-11-03 22:11 UTC Crash gnome-control-center
2024-11-03 11:11 2024-11-03 16:11 UTC Crash gnome-control-center

I've used lightdm along with gnome and still the same issue was
encountered; even disabling the the plymouth service (removing splash)
and through grub didn't do anything, I was stuck on the systemd logging
window, and couldn't get to my desktop.

Edit: for now, I am also forced to restart gdm each time this issue
occurs through tty.
