I tried disabling the system extensions and logging in again, which did work. I was able to reenable them all and gnome-shell was still working again. Then of interest, launching an app that uses an appindicator caused the shell to crash. I can reliably reproduce this, the appindicator extension is triggering the crash. It happens when an app registers with the indicator, which I have slack and mattermost set to autostart on login, which in turns triggers my crash at start.
