Thanks. I can see the password failures in the log, with a few possible
causes:

Aug 11 22:12:19 fantome gdm-password][4421]: pam_unix(gdm-password:auth): check
pass; user unknown
Aug 11 22:12:19 fantome gdm-password][4421]: pam_unix(gdm-password:auth):
authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=/dev/tty1 ruser= rhost=
Aug 11 22:12:21 fantome gnome-shell[2766]: JS WARNING:
[resource:///org/gnome/shell/gdm/util.js 285]: reference to undefined property
"_currentMessageExtraInterval"
Aug 11 22:12:23 fantome gdm-password][5711]: Unable to load file
'/etc/gdm3/custom.conf': Key file contains line “O# GDM configuration
storage” which is not a key-value pair, group, or comment

Mostly it sounds like /etc/gdm3/custom.conf contains an error?

** Package changed: gnome-shell (Ubuntu) => gdm3 (Ubuntu)
