You have been subscribed to a public bug:
To reproduce:
Open gnome-volume-control. On the Master channel (or whichever channel
your Volume Applet is set to use) make sure the left and right channels
are "locked" - using the toggle button with tooltip "Lock channels for
Master together"
Keeping the gnome-volume-control application visible, scroll over the
icon for Volume Applet in your panel. The volume will change as
expected, but notice in gnome-volume-control the channels unlock.
I'm using Ubuntu 8.10 Interpid Ibex, with Volume Applet 2.24.1
** Affects: gnome-media (Ubuntu)
