I have the similar problem as some people who have already submitted
bugs, I'm unsure if this is actually a dupe or not (better to be safe?).

I just got a Gateway P-6860FX laptop. The volume change buttons effect
PCM, instead of master. The volume goes up and down and I successfully
get a box showing the volume. In my case, this seems to be good because
if I mute or change the volume to the master channel, I continue to hear
sound at whatever PCM's volume level is set at.

My mute button seems to have no effect. When I hit the mute button, I
do get a "mute on" and "mute off" message. The mixer window does NOT
show any channel being muted.

I started off by putting Hardy on this laptop, so I have no idea if the
bug has been recently introduced or not. I had these problems right ouf
of the box.
