I'm glad you were able to find a solution that meets your present
needs...
The state of xserver at the moment in sid is a very fast moving target.
To my best understanding , what is happening is that all the video
configuration is being moved to the kernel.... kms is just the first step in
removing all the video and than input configs from the xserver...
The behavior of the (xserver video drivers especially) since the beginning of
this year is changing continually ( weekly for the most part, but daily at
times as well) and documentation of this is mostly confined to the debian
package and upstream changlogs for the time being....

ps: whenever you upgrade your kernel you may want to test re-enabling kms, as
it works well for the most part with kernels 2.6.32-4 and beyond..
