Numeric keypad on thinkpad a21m

Does anyone know how to enable the numeric keypad on a thinkpad? Under
windows the shift+numlk combo is used to toggle the numeric keypad on
and off. However, under X 4.0.3 this doesn't work, it merely makes the
relevant keys unusable.

Any help would be much appreciated.
