Well, nobody is forcing you to join a team - you are perfectly free to do so. But I feel some inconsitency in your reasoning: You do not want the help of a team because you are not experienced? Especially in this case I would recommend reading http://debian-science.alioth.debian.org/debian-science-policy.html because it gives some reasonable framework and if it comes to seeking a sponsor you are welcome to ask on debian-scie...@lists.debian.org.
