As I said to David on IRC, I've been pondering closing this bug report for a while as upstream has not released any version for a long time, and started to be less responsive. Also it needed significant patching when I took it from upstream. So with this note I think this can be closed, and if in the future upstream wakes up again, it can be ITPed again.
