My matplotlib debian packages are now on http://mentors.debian.net, so
instructions for installing on Debian should be modified.
This is the installation procedure:

Installation:
* add this lines to your /etc/apt/sources.list:
deb http://mentors.debian.net/debian unstable main contrib non-free
deb-src http://mentors.debian.net/debian unstable main contrib non-free
* then run:
# apt-get update
# apt-get install python-matplotlib python-matplotlib-doc
