I think discover is the most used tool (also used in the new debian-installer), but it does "only" scan the ata-, pci-, pcmcia-, scsi- and usb-buses. Mdetect is used for mouse detection, and kudzu .. segfaults on my two computers running unstable ... but I don't think it can detect keyboards, mouses or monitors. So what I think hwinfo can do that the other ones can do, is (don't shoot me if I'm wrong) keyboard and monitor detection. Hwinfo's output from two computers [1] and [2], is on the web. The main reason I want to package hwinfo, is that in Debian-Edu we have experienced that it is a very good tool for detecting hardware for automatically X configuration (see the xdebconfigurator package). We're also using discover, kudzu and mdetect and our experiences tells us that we want hwinfo as well! :) - Werner [1] http://skolelinux.no/~werner/hwinfo1.txt [2] http://skolelinux.no/~werner/hwinfo2.txt
